Sailing from Komodo to Ambon, this voyage explores some of eastern Indonesia's most remote and fascinating island landscapes. Travelling aboard a traditional Indonesian phinisi, the journey combines exceptional snorkelling, cultural encounters and exploration of the historic Spice Islands, where centuries of maritime trade shaped the region's unique heritage. Leaving the dramatic islands of Komodo behind, the expedition ventures into the vast Banda Sea, visiting remote island communities, secluded anchorages and vibrant coral reefs that thrive far from the well-travelled routes of Indonesia. Days are spent snorkelling over colourful reef systems, exploring ashore with local guides and enjoying the ever-changing scenery from the deck of the vessel. From the volcanic islands of the Banda Archipelago to the cultural heart of Maluku, this voyage offers an immersive blend of marine discovery, history and island life in one of Indonesia's most rewarding cruising regions.

Transfer to the vessel and settle into life aboard before setting out for your first snorkelling excursion amongst colourful coral reefs, tropical fish and, with luck, sea turtles. This evening, enjoy sunset from the deck as thousands of flying foxes leave their mangrove roosts, creating a remarkable wildlife spectacle against the fading sky. NB* Due to the unpredictability of flight schedules it is highly recommended to arrive in Labuan Bajo the day before departure. Ask us about pre-tour accommodation options.

Meals:  L,D

This morning, join a ranger-led walk on Rinca Island in search of the legendary Komodo dragon. Home to one of the largest populations of these remarkable reptiles, the island also supports deer, wild pigs, monkeys and water buffalo, providing a fascinating insight into the ecosystem that sustains the world's largest lizard. Later, return to the water to explore some of Komodo National Park's most celebrated reef systems. Snorkel amongst vibrant corals and abundant marine life, with opportunities to encounter graceful manta rays as they gather at feeding and cleaning stations. We may also visit shallow reef habitats frequented by green sea turtles, offering the chance to observe these gentle marine reptiles in their natural environment.

Meals:  B,L,D

Sail into the remote Bonerate Archipelago, a rarely visited corner of Indonesia renowned for its rich maritime traditions. Here, visit traditional boatbuilding communities where skilled craftsmen continue the centuries-old practice of constructing wooden phinisi sailing vessels by hand. Wander amongst partially completed hulls resting along the shoreline and gain a deeper appreciation for the remarkable vessels that have connected these islands for generations. Exploring local villages and coastal settlements provides an opportunity to experience everyday island life and learn about the enduring relationship between the communities of the archipelago and the sea. Encounters with local residents offer a fascinating insight into a culture shaped by navigation, fishing and boat building traditions. The region is also home to part of the world's third-largest coral atoll. Spend time snorkelling vibrant reef systems teeming with colourful fish, hard and soft corals, and an impressive diversity of marine life in the clear waters of this remote marine environment.

Meals:  B,L,D

Continue north to Batuatas, an island known for the dramatic limestone cliffs that rise along its western shoreline. Ashore, visit a traditional blacksmithing workshop where local craftsmen continue age-old techniques, hand-forging knives and tools that are prized throughout Indonesia. The visit offers a fascinating glimpse into the artisanal skills and cultural traditions that remain an important part of island life. Weather and sea conditions permitting, we may pass an isolated seamount in the Flores Sea that serves as a sanctuary for thousands of nesting seabirds. Surrounded by nutrient-rich waters, this remote outcrop attracts an abundance of marine life and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife observation from the vessel. The journey then leads into the spectacular Wakatobi National Park, one of Indonesia's premier marine reserves and among the most biodiverse reef systems in the world. Explore the crystal-clear waters surrounding Hoga Island, where vibrant coral gardens, dramatic reef walls and a remarkable variety of tropical fish create exceptional snorkelling opportunities. Combined with its remote location and rich island culture, Wakatobi is a true highlight of the voyage.

Meals:  B,L,D

Discover the unique maritime culture of the Bajau people, often referred to as the "Sea Nomads" of Indonesia. Visiting a traditional overwater settlement offers a rare opportunity to learn about a way of life intrinsically linked to the ocean. For generations, the Bajau have relied on the sea for sustenance, developing extraordinary freediving abilities and an intimate understanding of the marine environment that continues to shape their culture and identity today. The voyage then continues to the beautiful Bokan Islands, where turquoise waters, white-sand beaches and thriving coral reefs provide a spectacular setting for exploration. Enjoy time snorkelling, swimming and paddling amongst vibrant reef systems rich in marine life, including giant clams that inhabit the shallow lagoons and reef flats. A highlight of our visit is the opportunity to meet members of a local conservation initiative working to restore giant clam populations and promote sustainable marine resource management. Learn about their efforts to protect reef ecosystems while supporting local communities and traditional fishing livelihoods, providing valuable insight into the challenges and successes of marine conservation in this remote region.

Meals:  B,L,D

Sailing into the remote Sula Archipelago, we visit a traditional village on Taliabu Island, home to members of the Kadai people, one of the island's Indigenous communities. This rarely visited region offers a fascinating opportunity to learn about local customs and daily life, with warm welcomes and cultural exchanges providing insight into traditions that have been maintained across generations. While agriculture now forms the foundation of village life, traditional hunting practices and deep connections to the surrounding landscapes remain an important part of the community's heritage. A highlight of our time in the archipelago is the opportunity to swim in a remarkable marine lake inhabited by stingless jellyfish. One of only a handful of such ecosystems found worldwide, this isolated environment has allowed the jellyfish to evolve without natural predators, creating a unique and unforgettable wildlife experience. Surrounded by lush island scenery, the lake offers a rare chance to observe one of nature's most extraordinary evolutionary adaptations up close.

Meals:  B,L,D

Enjoy time exploring the idyllic islands and reefs of the western Sula Archipelago. White-sand beaches, clear tropical waters and vibrant coral gardens provide a relaxed setting for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding. These remote islands offer a chance to slow the pace and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of eastern Indonesia, both above and below the waterline. The voyage continues to Manipa Island, a place steeped in local folklore and renowned for its strong cultural identity. Visit a traditional village to learn about the agricultural practices that have sustained local communities for generations. Discover the production of sago, an important regional staple, alongside nutmeg and cashew cultivation, both reminders of the area's historic role within the Spice Islands trade networks. We also gain insight into the production of kayu putih oil, a traditional essential oil widely used throughout Indonesia. Derived from native trees and distilled using time-honoured techniques, it remains an important part of local culture and everyday life.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning, arrive in Ambon, marking the conclusion of our journey through the remote islands, reefs and cultures of eastern Indonesia. After breakfast, bid farewell to the crew and fellow travellers before disembarking and transferring to the airport or your onward accommodation. Having sailed from Komodo through the Banda Sea and the Spice Islands, you'll leave with a deeper appreciation for one of Indonesia's most diverse and rewarding maritime regions.
