Trip highlights

  • Visit Canada’s most remote island
  • Learn from expert naturalists about Sable’s unique ecology
  • See wild horses in their natural habitat
  • Explore by Zodiac (weather dependent)
  • Spot rare birdlife like the Ipswich sparrow
  • Explore Saint-Pierre, a French island off Canada’s coast

Sail into the Atlantic to discover Sable Island, one of Canada’s most remote and protected places. Known for its wild horses, vast dune systems, and grey seal colonies, this shifting sandbar offers a rare chance to experience true isolation. Land by Zodiac (weather permitting) and explore in small groups, guided by naturalists who reveal the island’s rich ecology and human history, from shipwrecks to life-saving stations. This journey also includes a visit to Saint-Pierre, a French island off Newfoundland’s coast, offering a cultural counterpoint to Sable’s wild beauty.

Trip Code: CNS

Our expedition begins in the colourful, sea-salted capital of Newfoundland. St. John’s is a city defined by the Atlantic, steeped in history, layered with culture, and set against the rugged eastern edge of North America. Here, centuries of maritime stories converge, from Beothuk navigation to early European fishing fleets. As we sail out through the famed Narrows, beneath the watchful eye of Signal Hill, Cape Spear appears to starboard, the easternmost point on the continent.

Today we settle into life aboard. As the open Atlantic stretches around us, the ship becomes both home and classroom. Our onboard experts begin a series of presentations, introducing the ecology, history, and fragile geology of Sable Island. Outside, the sea invites constant observation. Scan the horizon for seabirds, watch for dolphins and whales, or simply soak in the rhythm of ocean travel. Whether in the lounge, the library, or on deck with binoculars in hand, this is a day to tune into the journey.

Over the coming days, we explore Sable Island, a 42-kilometre crescent of shifting sand adrift in the Atlantic. Shrouded in mist and legend, this National Park Reserve is one of the most protected and remote sites in Canada. Landings are carefully coordinated with Parks Canada to preserve the island’s delicate balance. When conditions allow, we’ll approach by Zodiac and step ashore onto a world of wind-sculpted dunes and salt-stained air. Grey seals haul out along the beaches. Ipswich sparrows, found only here, flutter in the grass. And beyond the dunes, wild horses roam freely. They may appear quietly, as silhouettes against the horizon, or suddenly, in a rush of movement and sound. Our guides will lead small-group walks and shore explorations, weaving natural history with human legacy, from shipwreck stories to the quiet remains of long-abandoned life-saving stations. Zodiac cruises offer a sea-level view of the island’s changing shoreline and coastal wildlife. Every moment on Sable Island is rare. Each visit is shaped by the weather, the wildlife, and the stillness that surrounds it.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we arrive in Saint-Pierre, a pocket of France just off Newfoundland’s southern coast. With its cafés, cobbled streets and unmistakably European air, this tiny island offers a cultural shift and a fascinating counterpoint to Sable’s solitude. Take in the town’s blend of Breton, Basque and Norman heritage on a guided walk, then enjoy time at leisure. Perhaps you’ll explore a museum, sip coffee on a sunlit terrace, or visit a fromagerie for a taste of the island’s French connection. Saint-Pierre is a place to slow down, savour, and explore on foot.

Meals:  B,L,D

As we disembark, we’ll say farewell to shipmates and expedition team members who have shared stories, sightings, and unforgettable moments along the way.
