Baja Mexico Expedition: Whales, Sea Lions & Marine Life

Arrive into San José del Cabo, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Settle in and enjoy time at leisure in this charming coastal town, known for its historic character, gallery-lined streets and refined dining scene. In the evening, you may wish to explore the vibrant Gallery District, where art, live music and a relaxed atmosphere bring the town to life. Dinner is at your own arrangement. Overnight accommodation: Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton (or similar) in twin or single room depending on cabin choice.

Transfer to La Paz by coach, travelling across the Baja Peninsula to the shores of the Sea of Cortez. On arrival, enjoy time at leisure to explore this laid-back coastal city, where a scenic waterfront promenade, local boutiques and inviting cafés reflect its relaxed charm. In the early evening, board your expedition vessel and settle into your cabin. Meet your expedition team and fellow travellers before a welcome drink and your first dinner onboard as you prepare to set sail.

Cruise through the San José Channel, scanning the waters for dolphins, whales and other marine life as you settle into the rhythm of expedition travel. During the morning, your expedition team will introduce the equipment and activities for the days ahead. In the afternoon, come ashore at Los Gatos — a striking coastal site known for its red-hued cliffs and clear waters. Explore by snorkel or kayak, walk the shoreline, or hike into the surrounding desert landscapes shaped by wind and sea.

Spend the day in this sheltered bay surrounded by rugged desert terrain. Explore by skiff or kayak in search of marine life, or join a guided walk inland where birdlife and native flora thrive. A visit to a local ranch offers insight into traditional Baja culture.

Spend the morning exploring Isla Monserrate, where clear waters and rugged coastal landscapes create ideal conditions for snorkelling, kayaking and relaxed beach time. Guided hikes lead to elevated ridgelines, offering sweeping views across the Sea of Cortez. Conditions permitting, enjoy a beach gathering with refreshments in this remote and scenic setting. In the afternoon, return to the vessel and continue cruising in search of whales and other marine life, with time on deck to take in the surrounding seascapes.

Arrive at Isla San José and explore its sheltered lagoon system by kayak, paddling through winding mangrove channels where birdlife is abundant and the landscape feels calm and remote. These shallow, protected waters offer a unique contrast to the open coastline. Later, come ashore near Cayo Amortajada for time to beachcomb and explore at a relaxed pace, with opportunities to take in the island’s desert terrain and clear, tranquil waters.

Arrive at a crescent-shaped bay known for its white-sand beach and calm, clear waters. Walk inland trails for panoramic views or enjoy time on the beach, where the contrast between desert and sea is at its most dramatic.

Visit Los Islotes, home to a lively sea lion colony and one of the region’s most memorable wildlife encounters. Continue to Espíritu Santo Island, a protected reserve known for its striking red cliffs, turquoise bays and abundant marine life.
